The Sun: Chelmsford’s DiStasi the Region 1 Coach of the Year

Chelmsford’s Lou DiStasi has been named the National High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Region 1 Coach of the Year.

DiStasi received the prestigious award after leading the Lions to a memorable – and unlikely – Massachusetts Division 1 state championship last month.

Expectations weren’t high outside the program when the state pairings were announced. Chelmsford (14-8) was the 14th seed.

But, led by senior pitcher Matt Stuart, the Lions ripped off five state tournament victories to capture the program’s first baseball title in the MIAA era. The 1966 team also won the state title. Four of the tourney wins this spring came against higher-seeded teams.
