Chelmsford High School celebrates future teachers

CHELMSFORD, Massachusetts (May 28, 2026) – Chelmsford High School seniors who are planning to go into the field of teaching were recognized during the third annual Future Teachers Signing Day ceremony on Friday, May 22.

In total, 18 members of the Class of 2026 plan to make the foray into education; 17 of them were present for the ceremony.

“In many ways, today mirrors the signing ceremonies we often see for student athletes, but this celebration honors something equally impactful: a commitment to shaping lives, building communities and inspiring future generations through education,” said Katie Simes, the Health, Physical Education & Family and Consumer Sciences department coordinator for Chelmsford Public Schools. “Teaching is far more than a profession. It is a calling rooted in patience, compassion, leadership and service.”

Simes thanked the students in attendance for choosing to become educators.

“The world will always need caring, dedicated and passionate teachers, and today we celebrate your decision to make a difference through education,” she said. “We cannot wait to see the positive impact you will have on the future of education.”

School Committee vice chair Susan Mackinnon, a former teacher in the Chelmsford Public Schools system, commended the students for wanting to follow in her footsteps.

“When people ask what you’re going to do, it’s not the most glamourous of choices in some people’s eyes and it’s certainly not the one that’s going to pay the most,” she said. “But it’s so important and so rewarding. It’s challenging, it’s hard work, there are days it’s very frustrating, but it’s a career that brings you a lot of joy.”

During the ceremony, each of the students was presented with a lanyard with an honorary CPS teacher badge attached.

“This is what opens doors,” School Committee chair Maria Santos said of the badges. “You’re going to open doors to so many human beings in this world to the profession you’ve chosen. It’s an incredible one and it’s the most honorable one, I believe.”
