Chelmsford High School tennis courts dedicated

CHELMSFORD, Massachusetts (July 2, 2025) – On Tuesday afternoon, June 3, the newly renovated tennis courts located behind Chelmsford High School were dedicated in honor of Al Thomas.
Friends and family members of Thomas, along with current and former Chelmsford Public Schools staff and faculty, gathered to celebrate the occasion, which included the unveiling of a sign officially establishing the W. Allen Thomas, Jr. Tennis Courts.
Thomas is a former teacher, dean and principal of CHS who, in retirement, continues to volunteer and support students through his work in the Chelmsford Rotary Club.

Al Thomas speaks to the crowd gathered at the newly dedicated W. Allen Thomas, Jr. Tennis Courts at Chelmsford High School.
He remains an active and involved resident in town, often spotted at sporting events cheering on student athletes and in attendance for various performances to support the district’s music and theatre programs.
Thomas said he is incredibly grateful for being honored in such a way in the community he loves so dearly.
“Somebody told me that if you just find good people and hang around with them, you’re going to be OK, and boy, were they right,” Thomas recalled. “The Town of Chelmsford, if they haven’t figured it out yet – I think most people have – they have a wonderful situation in and out of the school, all around the town, on the stages, in the playing fields, at the library, you name it. … [It’s] one of the best towns in eastern Massachusetts.”
Dr. Jay Lang, Superintendent of Chelmsford Public Schools, said Thomas has long been a valuable member of the community.
“His name is synonymous with servant leadership,” he said. “Wherever you go in town, Al Thomas is there. There is not one person in town that does not know of Al or has not benefitted from what he has helped create in the Chelmsford community. Al’s strong sense and modeling of civic duty are what separates him from others.”
Chelmsford Town Manager Paul Cohen said Thomas epitomizes service above self.
“You’re an exceptional person,” he told the guest of honor. “And, therefore, that’s why an exceptional activity such as dedicating this court to you is so appropriate.”
Jeff Doherty, a longtime friend and former colleague of Thomas, shared several fond memories of their interactions over the years.
“Al was always there to support [the CHS administrators] with his wisdom, thoughtfulness, compassion, patience and his moral compass,” he said. “Al claimed House Dean was the toughest job at CHS, but with Al as our principal, the role of Dean was much easier and more satisfying.”
